The Suction Electrode is used to record or stimulate a tissue which remains submerged in saline. It is a popular choice to overcome the difficulties associated with air and oil recordings. With the Suction Electrode, it is quite easy to record extracellularly from very small hearts (insects), intestinal nerves, eye neurons and to stimulate muscles by an electrical pulse to their neurons.

More info

This Threaded Syringe is ideal as a source of suction for the electrode.
What size of glass capillary pipettes does the Suction Electrode accept?
The electrode accepts capillary glass with outer dimensions from 1.2 to 1.5mm.
The Suction electrode is monopolar.  How can I hook up a reference electrode?
Embedded within the suction electrode is a 99.99% pure silver wire that will be in electrical contact with the tissue by means of the fluid sucked into the pipette during application of the electrode to the tissue. The silver wire is connected to the central conductor of a BNC connector.
The outer conductor of the BNC connector is continuous with the shell of the suction electrode. Users will often solder a thin wire to the outer conductor, and then run it alongside the suction electrode down the length of the capillary glass.
